The site is located within the CBD area of Wu Han, at the junction of the Changqing Road and Yuncai Road. Facing towards the one of the biggest city parks Houxianghe Garden, with its total area of 136,000 m2, this new library is aiming to be one of the most advanced multi-functional libraries in the world.
Surrounded by city parks, we believe the building volume should be lifted up to create connections and accessibilities along the main axis. Our design has maximised the ground level potential for both the library users and the civilians.
The main volume of our design has emerged from the abstract totem of Chu Culture. The building combines intersections and penetrations of volumes for both exterior and interior spaces. We aimed to create a continuous path, which run through the building from inside and outside, accommodating all ways of reading and learning. This path consists open reading lobbies, enclosed reading rooms, multi-media halls, indoor activity ramps and outdoor landscape terraces. We believe that an advanced library nowadays provides not only reading rooms but also spaces attract people to stay here communicating and exchanging information.
